Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, together with television network, History, today announced the launch of a partnership to raise awareness and funding to restore and preserve the Alamo, a historic American landmark and iconic symbol of Texas state pride.
On Monday, May 18, the Governor and Land Commissioner will join the cast of “Texas Rising” at the Alamo for “Texas Honors,” an event to kick off fundraising efforts for the Alamo Endowment, honor the state’s great history and recognize an elite group of Texas legends, humanitarians, athletes, artists and entrepreneurs.
Texas Honors coincides with the premiere of “Texas Rising” an epic ten-hour miniseries set to premiere on HISTORY Memorial Day 2015. “Texas Rising”, produced by the Emmy Award-winning team behind record-breaking HISTORY miniseries Hatfields & McCoys, takes place during the spring of 1836 in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of the Alamo.
It chronicles the Texas Revolution and the formation of the Texas Rangers, and will be previewed at the Texas Honors event before an audience of Texas greats.
“It’s no secret that Texans take great pride in the history of their state, and there is no symbol more evident of that pride than the Alamo,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “The State of Texas’ partnership with HISTORY will be instrumental in raising awareness for the Alamo Endowment and its mission to preserve an important piece of our state’s storied history. I’m confident that through this collaboration, we will ultimately allow the Alamo to maintain its reputation as the ’Shrine of Texas Liberty’ and further establish itself as a world-class museum and tourist destination.”
“The preservation and restoration of the Alamo is one of my top priorities,” said Commissioner Bush. “Now is the time for all who love history — especially Texas history — to come together to defend this historic monument so that future generations may continue to visit the Alamo and understand what happened on this hallowed ground. This partnership with Governor Abbott, the Texas General Land Office and HISTORY is an important step in ensuring that the Alamo’s legacy lives on.”
“‘Texas Rising’ chronicles a defining moment in Texas — and American — history, beginning with the Battle of the Alamo,” said Dirk Hoogstra, EVP and General Manager, HISTORY. “In making the series we looked at the Alamo almost as its own character, not simply a landmark. Our goal with this partnership with the Governor and the Commissioner is not only to pay homage to the men and women who continue to make Texas such a great state, but also to shine a light on the need to preserve the Alamo as a powerful historical symbol of independence, perseverance and bravery.”
“My love for Texas and the Rangers dates back to when I co-created and Executive Produced the successful classic drama Walker Texas Rangers starring Chuck Norris,” said Leslie Greif, CEO Thinkfactory Media and Executive Producer on “Texas Rising.” “Many think that the Alamo was the end of the story, but as we all know, it was just the beginning. With the birth of the Texas Rangers being an important part of Texas pride, it was crucial to me to tell that part of the story. I am extremely proud of the synergy that the project has brought out — raising awareness for restoration and preservation of one of our country’s most prolific landmarks, will ensure that the story and the people are never forgotten.”
Honorees will be recognized in person at the Alamo on Monday, May 18, 2015. For each Texas Honors honoree, recognized for contributions to his/her respective field and to the state of Texas, HISTORY will make a charitable donation to the Alamo Endowment.
“Texas Rising” premieres on HISTORY Monday, May 25 at 9 PM ET/PT. “Texas Rising” is produced by A+E Studios, ITV Studios America and Thinkfactory Media for HISTORY. Leslie Greif (HATFIELDS & MCCOYS) serves as executive producer for Thinkfactory Media. Dirk Hoogstra and Julian P. Hobbs serve as executives in charge of production for HISTORY.
About Texas Rising
From the same team behind the multiple Emmy Award-winning and ratings-record breaking Hatfields & McCoys, Texas Rising is a ten-hour miniseries that details the Texas Revolution and the rise of the Texas Rangers. Texas Rising stars Bill Paxton, Brendan Fraser, Ray Liotta, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olivier Martinez, Thomas Jane, Crispin Glover, Rhys Coiro, Jeremy Davies, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Christopher McDonald, Max Thieriot, Chad Michael Murray, Trevor Donovan, Robert Knepper, Jeff Fahey, Rob Morrow and Kris Kristofferson, and is directed by two-time Oscar-nominated director Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields, The Mission).
In 1836, west of the Mississippi was considered the Wild West and the Texas frontier was viewed as hell on earth. Crushed from the outside by Mexican forces and attacked from within by ferocious Comanche tribes-no one was safe. But this was a time of bravery, a time to die for what you believed in and a time to stand tall against the cruel rule of the Mexican General Santa Anna (Martinez). The heroic General Sam Houston (Paxton), the rag tag Rangers and the legendary “Yellow Rose of Texas” lead this story of the human will to win against insurmountable odds. At the end, the Texas flag stood tall and victorious, claiming a piece of history for all eternity.
