LEADVILLE – The mountain town of Leadville is known for its history and now it’s helping to tell history.
For the past five days, a film crew from Thinkfactory Media in California has been shooting a documentary for the Weather Channel about the Donner Party. They were 80 pioneers who got stuck in the Sierra Nevada for months in the 1800s under massive amounts of snow. Rumor has it the 40 pioneers who survived resorted to cannibalism.
The film crew wanted to shoot footage in the historical locations but could not because of a lack of snow. Supervising producer Mayen Ma says that’s what brought them to Leadville.
“The Sierras this winter have been very dry and warm so we had to switch gears. So we started a search to see when and where in March we could find a place that would be cold enough and have a decent amount of snow,” Ma said.
The film crew still has more filming to do in other parts of the country. The documentary is expected to air on the Weather Channel later this year.
